HVAC cleaning per VDI 6022 — when hygiene inspection is required
HVAC systems need regular hygiene control. We explain VDI 6022, typical inspection intervals and how duct cleaning is executed in critical environments.
VDI 6022 sets hygiene requirements for HVAC systems in Germany. It is not a statutory law but state of the art — and therefore binding for operators once damage occurs.
The standard requires regular hygiene inspections: every two years for systems with humidification, every three years without. On adverse findings, cleaning is required — of ducts, fans, heat exchangers and filter chambers.
In cleanroom environments the bar is higher. Supply air is part of the cleanroom-class budget — contaminated HVAC compromises the ISO class. We therefore often combine cleanroom cleaning and HVAC cleaning in the same maintenance window.
Typical procedure: endoscope visual inspection, sampling (contact plates, aerosol measurement), mechanical dry cleaning with rotating brush systems and HEPA suction, follow-up check, sign-off protocol.
